The Goblin King Battle - 79010 LEGO Set Review

Updated: Jul 7

In anticipation for the announcement of the LOTR Rivendell set, I thought I’d review an older LEGO set based in Middle Earth. This particular set is based on the Hobbit films rather than Lord of the Rings.

‘The Goblin King Battle’ has 841 pieces with 8 minifigures. It is the Goblin King’s throne along with the walkways and bridges that make up the passageways throughout the rocky underground lair. The set contains the Goblin King himself, a huge figure rather than a standard ‘mini’ figure, along with 3 other goblins. Also included are Gandalf the Grey and 3 dwarfs; Dori, Nori & Ori.

The playable features of this set are the bridge that can be ‘popped’ loose, so that a dwarf’s axe can send the goblins chasing them falling ‘far’ below; the ladder that can be pushed over; a catapult; hidden treasure beneath the throne; a cage for putting a captured dwarf into; a large bucket that can be raised, lowered and spun around to aid in the goblins attack on the dwarfs; as well as a few accessories such as a book, a pail and various weapons. You can also choose to rearrange the layout of the passageways as they are built as separate sections.

I personally like the earthy colours of LEGO sets such as this one, but the lack of colour can go against it as a display piece if it is amongst other more colourful sets. Its biggest win for me is the minifigures, mainly the Goblin King, but the dwarfs and other goblins are all unique to this set as well.

We were fortunate to get our hands on a second-hand set, which was released in 2012, as we found it for sale years later once we started collecting LEGO. Being fans or the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, my wife was happy for us to pay the lower end of what it was worth to own this set. It is currently worth about A$314 for a new set, according to www.brickeconomy.com (approx. retail price was A$140), or it has an average price of A$260 for a used set.
